Why won't there be any "Mormons" at church this Sunday?

10/1/2013

Instead of seeing a parking lot full of cars from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm this Sunday, the parking lots of Mormon buildings will be vacant. That's because we'll be at home watching church for much more than our usual three hours.
Twice a year we participate in General Conference, in October and April. Five sessions of two hours each are broadcast from The Conference Center in Salt Lake over two days, Saturday and Sunday. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints speak to us in these sessions. In the Boise area, Channel 12 will broadcast four of the sessions. You can also view them on lds.org. The sessions are at 10 am and 2 pm both days with a priesthood session on Saturday night from 6-8 pm. The four day sessions are for all members of the church and anyone who is interested. The Saturday night priesthood session is for boys and men 12 years and older who hold the priesthood. For the first time in the history of the church, the priesthood session can be viewed live from lds.org.
I love General Conference weekend. I love being together as a family. I love munching on M&M's as we fill out bingo cards with key religious words like baptism, Jesus Christ, and prophet to help all of us pay attention to the talks. I love staying in my comfortable clothes and being inspired while wrapped up in a blanket on my couch. I love, love that grown men cry as they witness of the reality of Jesus Christ, as they express their love for the Savior, and teach us how we can come unto Christ. I love the strength I gain and the promptings I receive to do better--to forgive a neighbor, to be more patient with my children, to study deeper, to serve with a better attitude, to be grateful, to show love to my husband, to let my heart be softened and become like the Savior.
What an amazing time we live in, that all over the world from the comfort of our homes, we can see and hear the prophet of the Lord teach and testify. Like Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, and Peter, Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God. This weekend he will teach us what we need to know in our day to follow Jesus Christ.
