Some do and some don't. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints are commanded to follow The Word of Wisdom (Doctrine & Covenants 89), a law of health given as a revelation to Joseph Smith in 1833. The Word of Wisdom gives some specific don'ts. Don't drink wine. We interpret this to me alcoholic beverages. Don't drink strong drinks. This means tea and coffee. Don't use tobacco. And don't use illegal drugs. While the wording in The Word of Wisdom does not specifically say tea and coffee and illegal drugs, those are the accepted unhealthy substances that we avoid. Good choices are also listed: wholesome herbs, flesh of beasts and fowls of the air to be used sparingly, grain, and fruit. Mormons interpret these do's in different ways. Doctrine & Covenants 89 does not mention caffeinated soda like Coke. Just as some interpret the do's in different ways, we make choices about the don'ts. Some believe that any caffeinated drink like coffee or Coke should be avoided. Others drink Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, etc. We are supposed to use our agency, our ability to choose, and the Holy Ghost, a gift of the Spirit, to make choices that are best for each of us. When we eat or drink something that is addictive, making good choices becomes more difficult. I've found that for me, eating too much sugar affects my health. Our bodies are temples, a form that houses our Spirits, and we should respect and take care of that temple. That's the "why" behind The Word of Wisdom. Take care of your body because it is a gift from God.
Now I need to figure out how to eat chocolate more sparingly. Comments are closed.
