We have a new daughter living with us this school year. She's an exchange student from Switzerland. Last week she got the cold/flu and was miserable. She is not Mormon and asked me about getting some tea from the store because at home that's what she drinks to help her feel and get better. She doesn't like black tea so she bought a mixed box of herbal tea. I also bought some Lipton noodle soup. My mom used to make that for us when we were sick.
I've often wondered myself if Mormons are allowed to drink herbal tea. I know that we don't drink caffeinated tea like black tea. Is herbal tea okay? In the Word of Wisdom--our law of health-- it says, "hot drinks are not for the body or the belly." On Lds.org it says that hot drinks are tea and coffee and are harmful substances with no clarification on herbal tea. The cultural belief of Mormons is that caffeine is harmful, so caffeinated tea and coffee should be avoided and some believe that transfers to caffeinated soft drinks too. But I just found from on article on August 29, 2012 on mormonnewsroom.org, the official resource of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints for news media, opinion leaders, and the public, that the church has no official policy against caffeine. Here's a quote from the article, "the Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine. The Church’s health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and “hot drinks” — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee. " I still don't have an answer, except that after we are baptized we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost which teaches us truth and helps us discern between good and evil and guides us in the choices in our lives. The answer then would be for each individual member to use the gift of the Holy Ghost and decide as an individual. I'm a member of a monthly writing group. When I first started attending twelve years ago, I was the only Mormon in the group. Drinking tea was part of the custom of the group. At first I didn't partake, but then I started drinking the herbal tea that was offered. Later when another Mormon joined the group, I decided I should stop drinking tea so it didn't look like I was drinking caffeinated tea. Recently I told this story to a friend. She had great insight. She said, if you drink tea for health reasons and you feel okay about it, that's fine, but if you're drinking tea--even herbal tea--to fit in, then it's not okay. So use the gift of the Holy Ghost to decide for yourself about which tea you can or cannot drink and don't do it just to fit in. Comments are closed.
